I would like to know what font this is!
Here is a link to a (large-ish) photo of the text.
http://www.imagedump.com/index.cgi?pick=get&tp=542128
This is from a book:
“The Lost Weekend” by Charles Jackson?
In particular the First Syracuse University Press paperback edition
ISBN 081560419X
Thanks! |

Adobe Garamond is very close - or maybe some other version of Garamond.

The image is too fuzzy to make out details of serifs, which are keys to
distinguishing fonts.
Did you look at the front matter (e.g., copyright page) or back matter?
Often, books publishers will identify their fonts in one of those places.

Also, what is the font of the large first letter in the chapter?
Is it the same? Also, what is the term, if any, for this leading letter? |

You mean a bigeer character in the beginning od the first chapter. I'd call it initial letter or anfang (in german).

It's not Garamond, Adobe or otherwise. Janson is closer. See
http://www.myfonts.com/search?search[text]=janson. Type in the text "lay
watching the panes" and select 36 points, then compare with the same
words in the second line. Scroll down; some versions are closer than
others. Still may not be a perfect match.
The initial T is a different typeface, obviously. It is a different
shape (check out the top serifs) and it is an inline font (with the
white center). I don't know offhand what face it is. |

I think you mean it's an OUTLINE font.

No, an outline font has a uniform outline stroke. An inline font has a
contoured counter cut into its main stems (or more). Regardless, Jukka
identified it as Caslon Open Face, so it's moot. |

In German, we call this drop cap (initial) "Initiale". The word "Anfang"
simply means "beginning".
