Do notebook computers still use cold fluorescent lights (CFL)for their
LCD back lighting? There are now LCD HDTVs that use LEDs for their back
lighting. They are more expensive than CFL but give better contrast
ratios. But more important for laptops, I would guess that LEDs use
less power than CFLs, and would thus improve battery life. Has anyone
looked at this?

Depends some use LEDs some use CFL. For example I think most MacBooks
and MacBook Pros use LEDs now.
The majority of LCD TVs still use CFLs there are a few Samsung ones
which use LEDs.
There are other uniformity and colour correctness benefits with LEDs
over and above the power usage. However it's a case of price of the
panels and design cycles for he products they are used in.

OK, thanks. I didn't know that.

Yes, and I understand that two more manufacturers are coming out with
them before the end of the year.

Makes sense. So am I right in thinking their use will increase as the
design cycles come up and that, like other solid state devices, their
prices will keep declining so their penetration will further increase
over time?
