Advice is sought about obtaining a computer. My idea of an upgrade is to
clean the 5.25" drive, so I am quite unfamiliar with the rash of offers.
The required computer is strictly level entry, and is for a friend who knows
even less than the writer.

One suggested computer has an Intel Core Duo processor E2180, 160 GB hard
drive, 1 GB RAM (another will be installed), an Intel integrated graphics
accelerator, a 2 GB USB drive, and a DVD +/- RW dual layer multi burner.
The power supply is 400 watt, and there are a number of free bays and slots.
The OS is XP, pack 2. A floppy drive will be installed, but is not included
in the price of $399. With the extra RAM and FDD it should be about $460 or
so.

Use will be quite basic, with limited graphics and net use. No games.

The question is will the above box do what I hope, and are there better
value for money systems for beginners? If so, where might I find same. The
user is in Richmond, so a low-cost system from Geelong is not helpful.

Any advice gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks.

Stephen
