I am working on a patent "Natural Conversational Technology" - is
anyone interested ? Its based on how people actually talk to one
another and independent of culture, gender or age. It is a radically
new paradigm that will work ! All humans engage in conversation and we
can teach intelligent devices to also engage in conversation as humans
and to talk exactly like anyone we wish. It sound remarkable; yet it
it true.

Google’s Natural Conversational Technology
Natural conversational technology derives itself from an empirical
analysis of how people actually talk to one another as part of their
everyday social interactions. It comes out of the work on
Conversational Analysis.
Conversation in this context refers to the methods, the engine that
governs and regulates how people talk to one another. The most generic
and critical function of the conversational engine is the regulation
of turn taking.
The human enterprise of conversation can be viewed as a technology,
moving from the paradigm of artificial intelligence to a new radical
paradigm of "Natural Intelligence" and “Natural Interfaces”.
This is a major achievement in how we understand and deploy
intelligence to computer or other like devices. This technology is a
radical paradigm shift from how natural language is currently analyzed
by linguistics. However, the two technologies will merge at the right
time, as the new paradigm will provide the social context that current
work may utilize to enhance its processing power and decision making
abilities.
I envision a multiplicity of uses for this new technology: 1) The
underpinnings for developing a new operating systems that reside on a
local machine or the internet, 2) New intelligent applications, such
as a "Thought Processor" 3) Increasing advertising revenue by
determining the likelihood that a user will click on one ad vs.
another, 4) Making advertisement more intelligent and able to
communicate with the user, 5) The expansion of Google’s business into
new areas such as the healing arts, cognitive sciences, natural human
pattern recognition, natural language simulation and many others.
Google’s entertainment products will intelligently evolve to become
realistic to the degree that their interactions will be mistaken for
real human beings.
Potentially, hundreds of patents will come from this new technology,
which will differentiate and maintain Google's worldwide dominance for
decades to come. This technology is based on how humans think, listen,
learn, and reflect the deepest cognitive structures that have
developed throughout our evolution. The primordial nature of this new
technology paradigm will result in generating a feeling of "being at
home" when online or using Google's tools.
Google's product's will naturally feel better, friendlier, more
comfortable and optimistic, because at the deepest cognitive and
emotional levels, there will be a connection, a "match", a
synchronization, a "something" that users can't quite explain yet
desire. And this can be tailored for gender, age and culture - as we
all have one thing in common - our “humanness”. Conversation is the
most common and universal mode of expression for human beings, and
Google will now have incorporated and embodied its very essence.
I am currently working on a patent for this technology and in order to
go into more detail requires signing a Non Disclosure Agreement.
I am looking forward to talking with Google representatives about this
invention and the many ways Google will benefit. |

Most chatterboxes have historically worked by operating on a database
and putting in information to the database. Google searching is in
point of fact attempting to do just that.
An example of a friendlier interface is priovided by "cuil" where you
can actually see the range of your search changing as you proceed. In
Google you only get the results at the end. This could in fact be
significant.
Are people looking for Turing machines in their search engines?
Perhaps not. They are however looking for something a little more
interactive than Google. I think they are looking too towards an
engine that can answer a specific query rather than one that just
gives you websites.
CUIL prides intself on not using personal data. Now in a conversation
people often reveal intimate details about themselves. Thimgs thet
would be reluctant to let the authoroties know. Therein might lie an
ethical problem

Hi Ian - personal information may or may not be included in
conversation; and everyone lies all the time. When someone asks "How
are you"? do you actually reply with the absolute truth everytime.
Harvey Sacks wrote a famous paper entitled "Everyone has to lie" - it
does not effect the conversational engine at all. Understanding is
also a factor along with context. The patent I am working on "Natural
Conversational Technology" - accounts for all these factors.
Please comment and provide questions - more than happy to discuss any
issues.

My first comment is I think we are slighly talking at cross puposes. |
By "personal information" what I mean is the following, suppose X has
a daughter called Y. The system would know this and would ask how Y
was. People are not likely to lie at that level. That is not unless
they were spies building up a "legend".
If Y is going to university to study (say) Arabic, you might ask how
she was getting on and whether she would be spending any time in the
Middle East.
To ascertain truth you need to use a method which is in broad terms
statistical. You are quite right in this. However few people lie
consistently. The other thing to bear in mind is that body language
betrays lies. Computers are already being used in lie detector mode.
In fact all I was saying is that a database is needed for intelligent
conversation.
